The Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), Oyo State Wing, has suspended its industrial action and directed all public primary and secondary school teachers across the state to resume work on Thursday.
The decision followed a meeting of the union’s leadership after reviewing developments surrounding the concerns that prompted the strike, particularly the government’s response to the security situation involving the abduction of teachers and students in parts of the state.
In a statement issued after the meeting, the union said the suspension of the strike was reached in the interest of students, parents, and the education sector, while acknowledging ongoing efforts by the Oyo State Government and security agencies to address the issues raised by the union.
The NUT urged all teachers in public primary and secondary schools to return to their respective duty posts on Thursday and continue academic activities without delay.
The union, however, maintained that it would continue to engage the state government on issues relating to the welfare and security of teachers, stressing that the safety of educators and learners must remain a top priority.
It also expressed appreciation to teachers, parents, labour unions, and members of the public for their understanding, solidarity, and support throughout the period of the industrial action.
The suspension of the strike is expected to bring relief to thousands of pupils and students whose academic activities were disrupted, with schools now set to reopen and resume normal teaching and learning.
Education stakeholders have welcomed the development, expressing optimism that continued dialogue between the government and the union will lead to lasting solutions that guarantee a safe and conducive learning environment across Oyo State.
The union reaffirmed its commitment to protecting the interests of teachers while working with relevant stakeholders to ensure uninterrupted education and improved security in schools.
