The Federal Government has announced a major reform of Nigeria’s education sector, unveiling plans to phase out the current Junior Secondary School (JSS) and Senior Secondary School (SSS) structure as part of a comprehensive overhaul of the nation’s educational system.
The proposed reform seeks to replace the long-standing 6-3-3-4 system with a new framework designed to improve learning outcomes, simplify the transition between educational levels, and equip students with skills suited to the demands of the 21st-century economy.
According to the Minister of Education, the initiative is part of the government’s broader agenda to modernise the education sector, strengthen foundational learning, and create a more practical and globally competitive curriculum.
The new model is expected to place greater emphasis on science, technology, engineering, mathematics (STEM), digital literacy, entrepreneurship, technical and vocational education, as well as critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
Government officials explained that the reform is intended to reduce learning gaps, improve curriculum delivery, and ensure that students receive quality education that prepares them for higher education, employment, and self-reliance.
The ministry also disclosed that extensive consultations with education stakeholders, including teachers, school administrators, parents, state governments, and development partners, will precede the full implementation of the new system.
Education experts have described the proposed changes as one of the most significant reforms in Nigeria’s education sector in decades. They, however, stressed that the success of the initiative would depend on adequate funding, teacher retraining, improved infrastructure, curriculum development, and sustained policy implementation.
Parents and stakeholders have also called on the Federal Government to ensure a smooth transition that will not disrupt the academic progress of students currently enrolled under the existing structure.
If successfully implemented, the reform is expected to reposition Nigeria’s education system, enhance the quality of learning, and produce graduates equipped with the knowledge, skills, and innovation required to compete in a rapidly evolving global environment.
