The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has appointed Dr Amos Josiah Dangut, a Nigerian education administrator, as its new Registrar and Chief Executive Officer.
Dangut officially assumed office on October 1, 2026, becoming the 14th Registrar of WAEC. His appointment is for a five-year tenure running from October 2026 to September 2031, succeeding Alhaji Pateh Bah of The Gambia.
His appointment was ratified by WAEC’s international governing board during its 74th Annual Meeting in Accra, Ghana, in March 2026. Before his elevation to the regional position, Dangut served as Head of WAEC’s Nigeria National Office from October 2023 until September 2026.
Dangut has spent more than two decades with WAEC. He joined the council in 1998 after beginning his career in education and rising through several administrative and examination-related positions. His experience includes test development, examination administration, security, result management and the implementation of technology-driven reforms.
During his tenure as Head of the Nigeria National Office, Dangut was associated with several digital initiatives, including the rollout of Computer-Based WASSCE, digital marking, the Digital Certificate Portal and other technology-based systems designed to improve examination administration.
The new WAEC Registrar holds degrees in Animal Production and Animal Science, including a PhD in Animal Science, as well as a Master’s degree in Education Administration and Planning. He has also served on the boards of organisations including JAMB, JUPEB and the Nigerian Educational Research and Development Council.
His appointment comes at a significant period for WAEC as the examination body continues its transition towards greater use of digital technology in the conduct and management of examinations across member countries.
