FG Unveils Approved Textbooks for Nigerian Schools, Introduces QR Codes for 2026–2028

The Federal Ministry of Education has released the final list of ranked and approved textbooks for use in Nigerian schools during the 2026–2028 academic period, following the completion of the first phase of the National Textbook Ranking Exercise.

The first phase covers textbooks intended for Primary 1, Primary 4, Junior Secondary School 1 (JSS1) and Senior Secondary School 1 (SS1). The Federal Government said the exercise is designed to ensure that learners and teachers have access to quality, relevant and curriculum-aligned instructional materials.

New QR Tracking System Introduced

One of the major changes accompanying the new approved list is the introduction of a unique Ranking/QR Tracking Code for every approved textbook.

The code contains key information about each approved material, including its title, author or authors, publisher and year of publication. According to the ministry, the system is intended to make it easier to identify and monitor approved textbooks while improving accountability and transparency in their selection, procurement and use.

The ministry explained that generating and assigning the unique codes to all the ranked textbooks contributed to the time required to complete and validate the final list.

Second Phase Coming Soon

The National Textbook Ranking Exercise will be conducted in phases. Following the completion of the first phase, the Federal Government said preparations would begin for the second phase, which will cover textbooks for Primary 2, Primary 5, JSS2 and SS2.

The same ranking, identification and QR-tracking system will apply to textbooks approved under the subsequent phase.

FG Directs Schools and Publishers to Follow Approved List

The Federal Ministry of Education has urged publishers, schools, education authorities, procurement agencies and other stakeholders to consult the official approved list before selecting or purchasing textbooks for the affected classes.

The ministry said the reform is part of efforts to strengthen the quality of instructional materials available to Nigerian learners while improving transparency and accountability in the provision of textbooks across the country’s education system.

The complete 2026–2028 Ranked and Approved Textbooks list, including the Ranking/QR Tracking Code for each approved title, has been made available by the Federal Ministry of Education. Stakeholders are expected to adhere to the approved list when providing and using textbooks for the specified classes.
